The Ultimate Fighter: Season 11 – Episode 1 Recap

The 11th season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ started with some Yager and ended with a “Moneyshot”. Say what!?
The premiere episode began with a look at the newly remodeled TUF gym before we met this season’s young, hungry competitors. Dana White arrived with Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz and gave the good old expletive laden “So you wanna be a fighter” speech, this time choosing to really hammer home his main point of never leaving it in the hands of the judges, a phrase that also adorns the wall above the fighters’ dressing rooms. After last season and all the snooze fights, Dana is ensuring that we get much more exciting fights and he even added a new element to the contest just for that reason. This season will include a wild card fight between the two best performing fighters that lose, so as to encourage some “balls to the wall” brawls to excite the fans. With so much focus on making fast-paced, exciting fights, don’t expect this season to disappoint!

Preliminary Card:
Apparently you can scrap the idea of Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz 3 as well as Randy Couture vs Rich Franklin because a source close to the situation told Heavy.com today that Liddell vs Couture 4 is in the works for UFC 116. The bout has also been rumored to be the co-main event to the blockbuster match up between UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and newly crowned UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin on July 3rd.

With Frank Mir’s quest to finally get back in the cage with Brock Lesnar ruined by a very large and scary speedbump named Shane Carwin, what will be next for Frank? He was so obsessed with finally getting the rubber match with his white whale, that he bulked up and completely changed his fight style to suit the larger opponent. While his formula for success gave him wins over big Nog and Kongo, it seemed to hinder his ability to work the kind of fight he wanted against a hard hitting Carwin. It seemed that Mir was more than willing to take a few shots to get better position, but his lack of interest in avoiding contact resulted in Carwin landing 21 straight punches during the fight. It was the wrong fight against the wrong opponent, and now Frank has to go back to the drawing board and work his way back up to a title shot. While a loss in the heavyweight division may not have been a big deal 5 years ago, it’s now become a gauntlet of young talent that he now has to wade through to get his spot back as one of the top 3.
