The Ultimate Fighter: Season 11 – Episode 1 Recap

The Ultimate Fighter: Season 11 – Episode 1 Recap

ufc tuf black logo

The 11th season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ started with some Yager and ended with a “Moneyshot”. Say what!?

The premiere episode began with a look at the newly remodeled TUF gym before we met this season’s young, hungry competitors. Dana White arrived with Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz and gave the good old expletive laden “So you wanna be a fighter” speech, this time choosing to really hammer home his main point of never leaving it in the hands of the judges, a phrase that also adorns the wall above the fighters’ dressing rooms. After last season and all the snooze fights, Dana is ensuring that we get much more exciting fights and he even added a new element to the contest just for that reason. This season will include a wild card fight between the two best performing fighters that lose, so as to encourage some “balls to the wall” brawls to excite the fans. With so much focus on making fast-paced, exciting fights, don’t expect this season to disappoint!

Lombard vs Filho Set for Bellator XVIII

Lombard vs Filho Set for Bellator XVIII

lombard
Bellator today confirmed the previously reported rumors of Hector Lombard taking on the troubled Paulo Filho are indeed true. Lombard, the current Bellator middleweight champion, will not be defending his belt, instead the bout will be considered a ‘superfight’ just like the lightweight match up of Eddie Alvarez and Josh Neer. The two will meet at Bellator XVIII on May 13th at a location yet to be determined.

Lombard is a superb 25-2-1 and hasn’t lost in almost 4 years since he dropped a decision to Gegard Mousasi at PRIDE Bushido 13 in Japan. That’s 18 fights in a row without a loss, but it is definitely safe to say that a game Paulo Filho is his toughest challenge since a young Mousasi.

Chuck Liddell vs Randy Couture 4 in the works for UFC 116?

Apparently you can scrap the idea of Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz 3 as well as Randy Couture vs Rich Franklin because a source close to the situation told Heavy.com today that Liddell vs Couture 4 is in the works for UFC 116. The bout has also been rumored to be the co-main event to the blockbuster match up between UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and newly crowned UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin on July 3rd.

Chuck and Randy have both put on classic fights in the past with “The Iceman” getting the better of “The Natural” 2/3 times with 2 knock outs. Randy won the first match as he shocked the world by technically knocking out Liddell.

Carwin's Crushing of Mir

Carwin's Crushing of Mir

shane-carwin-5

The real main event of last night’s UFC 111 in New Jersey came in the form of two top 5 ranked Heavyweights battling in the Octagon for a chance at the current UFC Heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar.

Shane Carwin had never left the first round of a fight and none of his opponents had ended the fight on their feet. Knocking out a clear path to the Interim Heavyweight shot he found himself up against the biggest test of his career to date in the always dangerous Frank Mir.

What becomes of Mir?

What becomes of Mir?

With Frank Mir’s quest to finally get back in the cage with Brock Lesnar ruined by a very large and scary speedbump named Shane Carwin, what will be next for Frank? He was so obsessed with finally getting the rubber match with his white whale, that he bulked up and completely changed his fight style to suit the larger opponent. While his formula for success gave him wins over big Nog and Kongo, it seemed to hinder his ability to work the kind of fight he wanted  against a hard hitting Carwin. It seemed that Mir was more than willing to take a few shots to get better position, but his lack of interest in avoiding contact resulted in Carwin landing 21 straight punches during the fight. It was the wrong fight against the wrong opponent, and now Frank has to go back to the drawing board and work his way back up to a title shot. While a loss in the heavyweight division may not have been a big deal 5 years ago, it’s now become a gauntlet of young talent that he now has to wade through to get his spot back as one of the top 3.

The Great “Pound for Pound Best” Debate

Before we venture into this controversial debate, allow me to explain my criteria for determining the best P4P Mixed Martial Arts fighter in the world. Imagine that there was machine which could shrink down a heavyweight fighter into a lightweight fighter (while proportionally maintaining his skill-set, strength, speed, etc), or that could blow up a Lightweight into a Heavyweight in the same manner (think “Honey, I shrunk the kids”). If there was such a machine, and you could for example: Shrink Fedor to a 155 pounder so that he could fight BJ Penn, who would win? The following are my rankings of the P4P best fighters in the world, with explanations as to why they rank where they do.
