Bellator today confirmed the previously reported rumors of Hector Lombard taking on the troubled Paulo Filho are indeed true. Lombard, the current Bellator middleweight champion, will not be defending his belt, instead the bout will be considered a ‘superfight’ just like the lightweight match up of Eddie Alvarez and Josh Neer. The two will meet at Bellator XVIII on May 13th at a location yet to be determined.
Lombard is a superb 25-2-1 and hasn’t lost in almost 4 years since he dropped a decision to Gegard Mousasi at PRIDE Bushido 13 in Japan. That’s 18 fights in a row without a loss, but it is definitely safe to say that a game Paulo Filho is his toughest challenge since a young Mousasi.
Filho (19-1) has only a single loss on his record, a fight which to this day is still weird. Chael Sonnen took apart an extremely unfocused and possibly out of his mind Paulo Filho but did not finish him. Filho looked good against Manhoef at DREAM.10, scoring a win via armbar. If Filho comes prepared mentally and physically then we have ourselves a very, very special treat. If he is not in the right frame of mind then this would be a big disappointment for Bellator.
