Fabricio Werdum’s walkout took longer than his fight with Fedor Emelianenko did. The Brazilian called “Vai Cavalo” needed only 1 minute and 9 seconds to use his highly credentialed jiu jitsu talents to shock the world of mixed martial arts and prove that the “baddest man on the planet” is merely human.
Fedor started by closing the distance with Werdum. The two then felt each other out before the first serious attack was performed by Emelianenko. The punches didn’t seem to land too hard but Werdum went to his backside, welcoming Fedor right into his guard. Fedor, thinking he smelled blood, obliged and recklessly dove right in trying to end the fight quickly with some ground and pound. Werdum caught a flailing arm but it was pulled out right away. Fedor unfortunately did not learn from his near mistake and repeated the same action however this time “Vai Cavalo” got a good grip and also applied the triangle to really seal the deal by cutting off Emelianenko’s oxygen. Fedor tapped just once, well aware that he had been defeated.
The smile on the face of Fabricio Werdum, immediately following the win was filled with so much happiness. He beat the most iconic figure in the sport and made a name for himself in history while paving a road for his future. Werdum had previously earned victories over large names like Gabriel Gonzaga, Brandon Vera and even current Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem but this is by far the largest of them all. This isn’t like catching your ordinary fish, it’s more like catching the mythical catfish that weighs 100 lbs that everyone has seen yet never caught. This is truly something that no one has ever done nor may do again depending on what Fedor’s future plans are.
In the end, Fabricio Werdum made a very great argument as to why he should be considered one of the best heavyweights in the world. Fedor on the other hand, has already done that and one loss can’t take it away.
