Tonight there were a few smaller MMA promotions in action. The inaugural event for Fight Me MMA took place in St. Charles, MO and War on the Mainland went down in Irvine, CA. A few familiar names went to battle. For some it was a good step toward being picked up by a larger organization and for others it was not as great.
At Fight Me 1, Josh Neer, the former UFC lightweight, took on Jesse Finney, an undefeated up and coming fighter. Neer was in total control the entire fight, taking mount when he wanted and delivering some damage from top position. That opened an opportunity for Neer to catch a guillotine choke that ended the fight with just 15 seconds left in the first frame.
In California, at War on the Mainland, Jens Pulver was stopped by Diego Garijo in just 67 seconds via a guillotine choke. Pulver’s past makes him a legend in the sport but his future in MMA looks very dim. Also, at the same event, Tim Sylvia controlled the first round of his fight against Paul Buentello and did the same in the second before knocking out Buentello with just 3 seconds left.
Neer is still a very good lightweight, someone the UFC is most likely interested in re-signing. His loss to Alvarez was pretty brutal but he can make exciting fights and beat some good names at 155lbs.
Sylvia is 3-0 in his last 3 fights and will face Pedro Rizzo in his next outing with PWP, the company behind War on the Mainland. I could see him doing well in Strikeforce’s heavyweight division if he can lose a little more weight.
While tonight didn’t offer the best fights it was still cool to get some extra MMA in during this already stacked month.
