Jose Aldo will begin 2o11 with the first defense of the new UFC featherweight championship. His opponent was not named during yesterday’s UFC/WEC merger conference call, but now the UG News on MixedMartialArts.com is confirming that Josh Grispi will be the man of the opposite side of the Octagon on January 1st.
Grispi has never lost in WEC competition and is currently riding a 10 fight win streak overall. In fact, the last 8 of Grispi’s wins have all come by stoppage including 5 submission victories.
Aldo was given the opportunity for a fight against Kenny Florian in the UFC’s lightweight division, however Aldo and his management declined to accept the bout. It was probably a good decision for the UFC since they will need some star power in their newly created featherweight and bantamweight divisions.
UFC 125 will take place in Las Vegas on January 1st. The main event features the UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar as he looks to avenge his only loss against the undefeated Gray Maynard. The card will be available on pay-per-view.
