Jon Jones out of title fight, Rashad Evans will instead meet Phil Davis at UFC 133

by Adam Lawman

The light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans that was planned for this fall has been called off. MMAJunkie.com’s John Morgan reports that Jones is being setback by complications from a right-hand ligament tear suffered in his UFC 128 win over “Shogun” Rua.

This basically proves that somehow there is a curse around Rashad Evans lately. Well, not really, but he waited for Rua only to tear his knee and see his teammate Jones take his chance and win the belt. Then, he gets pitted into a match-up with Jones only to be forced out of a title shot once again. Evans is an elite 205 pounder that is looking to get his gold back but he can’t catch a break.

That’s where the UFC stepped in and gave Evans a decent fight to fill the time. Evans will square off against another stand-out wrestler turned MMA star in Phil Davis.

Davis is currently developing quite well. It may be a slower pace than Jones, whom he is often compared to, but they are two different humans. Davis looked really solid against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira as he took home a unanimous decision win. Many media members wanted a more massive massacring of Lil Nog but I feel Davis did excellent and looked very impressive. Davis also has crafty jiu jitsu skills which he has showcased against Tim Boetsch and Alexander Gustafsson in the Octagon.

This serves to be a very pivotal bout for Evans in his return to title contention and for Davis as he looks to take become part of the elite crew at 205 pounds.

UFC 133 will be live from Philadelphia on August 6th, 2011 and also features Lil Nog versus Rich Franklin and Vitor Belfort versus Yoshihiro Akiyama.
