FS1 UFC 192 POSTFIGHT SHOW Quotes and Videos – 10/3/15

Stann on Cormier’s Win: “When you really wondered if he could win, he dug in and got it done.”

Houston – The following quotes and videos are from tonight’s FS1 UFC 192 POSTFIGHT SHOW on FS1 hosted by Ariel Helwani, with Brian Stann and Dominick Cruz providing analysis. Megan Olivi conducted interviews.

FOX UFC analyst Brian Stann how Daniel Cormier beat Alexander Gustafsson: “This was a total chess match. These guys had to go to Plan B. In round five the champion Daniel Cormier really turned it on and moved forward, forward, forward. He sealed the victory. We expected to see Daniel outwrestle the striker. And the striker was going to out-strike the wrestler. But things went very differently. It was Daniel walking down Gustafsson tonight. When you really wondered if he could win, he dug in and got it done. He made some mistakes. He doesn’t move his head when he’s moving in and got hit a lot. He didn’t wrestle Alexander as much as he could have. But we’ve got to give Alexander some credit, too. He took down Daniel Cormier who’s the Olympic wrestler, twice.”

FOX UFC analyst Dominick Cruz on what Cormier did to prevail over Gustafsson: “Daniel needed to go out there and win the fifth round to win that fight. He did it against a taller, longer boxer. He wanted to set a higher pace in the last round. Alex has to go back and fix that to win that title.”

Daniel Cormier on hurting his foot in the fight: “Early in the fight I was landing inside kicks and Alex did a great job checking them. When I finished it swelled up right after the fight. I’ll have to get an X-ray.”

Cormier on beating Gustafsson: “These are the ones when you start fighting you dream about when you have to dig really deep and overcome an obstacle sometimes you think you can’t overcome. In the second round, he cut me, and I was seeing double out of one eye. I had to go rebuild. He hurt me really bad with the knee. It was one of those times you don’t know if you’re going to get it done but if you’re still standing, you keep fighting.”

Cormier on improving his performance: “I’ve got to get better. I’ve got to move my head more. I have to wrestle more. I don’t have anything to prove. I said I could beat Alex in a stand-up fight, but I didn’t really have to.”

Cormier on Jon Jones posting a message on Instagram: “I’m not thinking about it. I’m here. He’s not. Our time will come. I didn’t leave this organization high and dry. He’s playing around on Instagram right now.”

Stann on if Jon Jones will return to face Cormier: “I believe he’s coming back and he wants to fight DC immediately. He’s been in the gym training. I’ve never seen him lift weights and train between fights. He’s bigger and stronger than I’ve ever seen him. I think he wants that fight.”

Cruz on Jon Jones coming back: “I know Jon thinks he’s the best in the world. He can’t stand Daniel Cormier. But DC is doing his job and part of being a champion is doing your job.”

Stann on Rashad Evans vs. Ryan Bader: “Bader got off first, was able to sneak the jab through and even went for a takedown and it all took Rashad off his game. That big right hand would stop Rashad in his tracks. This was the most impressive win of his career.”

Ryan Bader on how he felt about his win against Rashad Evans: “I felt like myself. It’s all coming together. All the experience is paying off. I used to fight in a fog. I can think on the fly and everything is coming together.”

Bader on how he’s improved with new coaches: “I developed a good jab and started more Thai boxing. I’ve opened up my hips and put my combos together. I’ve always had takedowns. I’m building on my game. The jab was working, Rashad was slick. I wanted him to overcommit with the big right and get him with an uppercut.”

Bader on beating Evans after all the trash talking: “That feels good. Calling me the easiest fight in the division, that’s disrespectful. I respect Rashad. I watched him through his whole career. Cormier looked great. I want to fight Cormier for the title.”

Bader on if he wants the title fight: “I want to get a title shot. But I can’t control that. I can’t control if Jon Jones comes back and gets the next shot. I can control the guy in front of me and that was Rashad tonight.”

UFC President Dana White on Cormier vs. Gustafsson: “It was an unbelievable, incredible war. The pressure Cormier puts on guys is unbelievable. How did he recover from the knee to stay in that fight? I’m so blown away, they stole the show.”

White on if Bader will get the next title shot: “I don’t know. I think Bader had an opportunity tonight. Rashad looks old and slow. Rashad’s been out for a while, had a couple of knee surgeries. I have no idea what I’ll do.”

White on if Jon Jones will come back and get the title fight: “I don’t know. Jon has some obligations with his personal situation. I don’t know how it will all play out.”
