FS1 UFC 201 POSTFIGHT SHOW Quotes and Videos – 7/30/16

Cruz on Woodley being in Lawler’s head: “He was moving backward. There was something in Lawler’s head about Woodley’s power.”

Thompson on getting the title shot vs. Woodley next: “I’ve cleaned out the division. I should be next. I’m going to be making the money with my foot against his head. This is my division.”

Los Angeles – The following quotes and videos are from tonight’s FS1 UFC 201 POSTFIGHT SHOW hosted by Karyn Bryant, with Dominick Cruz, Daniel Cormier and Stephen Thompson providing analysis. Megan Olivi conducted interviews.

FOX UFC analyst Daniel Cormier on Tyron Woodley knocking out Robbie Lawler: “There was one thing you may have missed: the first time Tyron went at him straight, and the second time he did it at a little angle and he caught him. The first time Tyron went at him, he went to the body first, then the second blitz he went to the head first and got him. Guys who work for FOX have been winning the belt. Should Tyron be worried that Stephen is working here now too?”

FOX UFC analyst Dominick Cruz on how Woodley caught Lawler: “Tyron Woodley was moving forward and he was able to land the right hand. Robbie Lawler usually fights moving forward. The one thing he needed to do was move forward and he didn’t do it. He was backing up tonight. If he was moving backward, there was something in his head about the power of Tyron Woodley. Tyron said he knew that Robbie was reacting to his wrestling. He got Lawler to back up and he never backs up. He did the feints and he saw the reaction and he blitzed him and knocked him out.”

FOX UFC analyst Stephen Thompson on predicting the first round finish: “I knew if it was going to happen, it’d be in that first round. I didn’t expect Lawler to back up. You can’t let Tyron move forward. He’s too explosive and that’s what happened. Walking backwards was a big mistake. That movement side to side is important.”

Cormier on if Lawler has taken too much damage in his career: “I don’t believe that his chin has expired. That was Tyron’s explosive nature that won the fight.”

Tyron Woodley on how good it feels to win the title: “It feels amazing. He was a teammate. It was a little awkward at first, but I felt I’m the best mixed martial artist. I’m excited to be standing here now.”

Woodley on his confidence having an 18 month layoff before this fight: “The preparation was already done. I put in the hard work. He’s a great fighter. But I thought I had more ways to win the fight with my wrestling, my grappling, and my speed advantage. If you can’t hit me, you can’t hurt me.”

Woodley on if he learned something by training with Lawler in the past: “Yes, and I think he got something from training from me. When I was wrestling with him he realized I was better than him. He was fearful of my wrestling. He was very cautious for that. I did a little level change feint, and he reacted, and I knew he was fearful and that set up my hands.”

Woodley on if he wants to fight Thompson next: “You said that you wanted to fight Lawler. Now you get the opportunity. Now Nick Diaz is coming off suspension in two days. If he wants to fight on the same card with his brother in August, he can against me. That’s the money fight. Let’s go get it. I’m ready.”

Woodley on the pressure of other FOX analysts being champions now: “I couldn’t let us down. That was some pressure. I was thinking, I can’t be the only one who works at FOX and comes back without belt.”

Woodley on if he’ll fight Thompson soon: “You’ll get your chance after I make this money [against Diaz].”

Thompson on fighting Woodley: “I’ve cleaned out the division. I should be next. I’m going to be making the money with my foot against his head. This is my division.”

Cruz on Rose Namajunas vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz: “The clinch of Karolina really took away Rose’s gas tank with the knees to the body. Karolina showed why she deserves the title shot.”

Cormier on Kowalkiewicz: “The cardio is great for Karolina. It was the knees to the body that made the difference. Rose did a great job early with counter rights, but she lost the pop on her punches by the third. Cardio and conditioning plays a factor, but the constant pressure really got to Rose.”

Karolina Kowalkiewicz on how she changed after the first round: “My coach said I lost the first round so I went out and was working, working, working.”

Kowalkiewicz on fighting Namajunas: “She’s a very tough fighter. But I was prepared for this.”

Kowalkiewicz on getting a title fight next: “I hope I will fight her in New York. She’s always said I’m not on her level. I feel I am now. I hope she’s ready for me.”

UFC President Dana White on if Kowalkiewicz is next for the title: “I’d love to do that fight in Poland. Joanna wanted us to sign her so she could prove to everyone that she’s best in Poland. I could see them fight in New York, but I’d rather see it in Poland.”

White on Ellenberger fighting with his back against the wall: “He had to. We had cut him. He came to Vegas and said, don’t cut him. He said he’d come out and deliver. We put him against Matt Brown and he delivered.”

White on the year so far: “We’ve got a lot more crazy ones coming. UFC 202. UFC 205 in New York. We’re putting together some great cards in the end of the year.”
