Getting to know the King of Kombat

Getting to know the King of Kombat

By Eric Shields

Most people think of Austin as “The Live Music Capital of the World” but Ron Hernandez, owner and CEO of the Austin based King of Kombat (KOK), wants you to know that MMA is here too; and here to stay.

Since the promotion’s inception in September of 2007, KOK has grown to become a well respected competitor in the industry.  Ron had his first taste of MMA as a sponsor.  Like many out there, Ron felt he could run a better company that treated its fighters better and offered a more thrilling package for the fans.  Unlike most, he had the determination to see his ideas through. Now with the ninth fight of the organization set for this week and events booked until 2012, it appears Ron knows exactly what he is doing.

Under the Radar MMA: Josh Neer and Tim Sylvia pick up wins, Pulver loses quick

Under the Radar MMA: Josh Neer and Tim Sylvia pick up wins, Pulver loses quick

by Adam Lawman

Tonight there were a few smaller MMA promotions in action. The inaugural event for Fight Me MMA took place in St. Charles, MO and War on the Mainland went down in Irvine, CA. A few familiar names went to battle. For some it was a good step toward being picked up by a larger organization and for others it was not as great.

At Fight Me 1, Josh Neer, the former UFC lightweight, took on Jesse Finney, an undefeated up and coming fighter. Neer was in total control the entire fight, taking mount when he wanted and delivering some damage from top position. That opened an opportunity for Neer to catch a guillotine choke that ended the fight with just 15 seconds left in the first frame.
